Methods on Covid-19 epidemic related to Vietnam visa

July 06, 2021

The Covid-19 epidemic in Vietnam is complicated. To keep the risk of further spread as low as possible, the Vietnamese Government has virtually blocked off the country from the outside world, which also affects the use of tourist and business visas. You can read about the impact of these measures on your travel plans on this page. This information was last updated on June 24, 2021.

How serious is the coronavirus problem in Vietnam?

Vietnam has been relatively quick to implement rules against the coronavirus, but as of May 2021, the country is seeing larger-scale outbreaks. Presently, 11,264 infections have been reported, and 72 deaths have been confirmed due to the virus (as of June 24, 2021). This makes Vietnam be one of the countries that managed the coronavirus outbreak best, even as infections have been increasing rapidly by Vietnamese standards over the past few weeks. The measures taken by the government are not only aimed at preventing the spread of the virus in the country but also to prevent those infected from entering Vietnam.

Can I still travel to Vietnam?

Generally, foreigners cannot travel to Vietnam until further notice. However, people with Vietnamese nationality are still allowed to enter. Exceptions are also made for those who wish to enter the country to provide medical or other specialized services, and there is also an exception for “professionals, business managers, etc., and skilled workers” necessary to keep businesses running. These people must apply for a visa through their Vietnamese business partner, not through an embassy or consulate.

Travelers who are allowed entry must have a medical certificate from a doctor stating that they do not have coronavirus symptoms and test negative for COVID-19. They must present this declaration upon passport inspection and undergo a 21-day quarantine at a designated location in Vietnam upon arrival (authorized hotel or government-established quarantine facility). During this time, they will be tested for coronavirus three times. If all tests are negative, they can self-isolate for the next 7 days, where they will be retested twice. Visitors will have to pay for the quarantine and testing costs themselves.

An exception to the quarantine rule applies to diplomats, official passport holders, and business travelers, the aforementioned “experts, business managers and skilled workers” and their families, as long as they are in the country for less than 14 days. However, they must undergo PCR testing 3 to 5 days before arriving in Vietnam at a testing facility recognized by the Vietnamese government. In Vietnam, they also have to regularly do PCR tests. In addition, they are required to have health insurance that covers medical expenses abroad or can assure their company that it will cover any coronavirus-related expenses.

When is it safe to travel to Vietnam?

I’m still in Vietnam, what should I do?

Due to the increase in the number of infected people since the beginning of May, many provinces have banned parties, events, religious gatherings and gatherings, at the same time closed schools, food service establishments and other non-essential services. In provinces with particularly high infection rates, (partial) closures are in place. Across the country, wearing masks in public places is mandatory, and restaurants have minimum distance requirements. Coronavirus tests are being done in public places, which is a must. Violation of these hygiene regulations can result in heavy fines. You may be asked to quarantine yourself in undesirable and unsanitary conditions if you show signs of illness. In that case, contact the British embassy in Vietnam.

If you want to leave the country, that can be done via a commercial flight from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, via the South Korean capital Seoul at Incheon airport, Asiana Airlines, KLM and Korean Air provide flights. Travelers returning from Vietnam must provide all details of their trip and present a negative COVID-19 test result, taking up to 3 days before departure. After arriving in the UK, they have to take 2 more tests which must be booked before arrival. They were also asked to self-isolate for 10 days.

If you are still in Vietnam and cannot or do not want to return home, contact the Immigration Department to find out if you can extend your visa or residence permit. You can find Immigration service offices in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.

Who is responsible for financial losses?

Coronavirus has caused some major financial losses to travelers, tour operators, tour operators and insurance companies. In some cases, you may be successful in claiming damages, but this is certainly not always the case. The Vietnam Immigration Department also does not refund the visa application fee that visitors have submitted, even if they cannot use the visa due to the coronavirus.

Disclaimer of responsibility: Coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused severe consequences for a large number of tourists, whether they had a Vietnam visa or not. Presently, not all consequences can be properly assessed, and many measures and restrictions are changed daily. The information on this site has been carefully compiled, but it can’t be guaranteed that it is always complete and up to date. Also, contact your travel agent and/or airline for the most recent developments on coronavirus in Vietnam.
